No, but advised unless you have previous experience in ATC or RAF.

It depends where you are, as in my wing I was told that they prefer you to serve some time as as CI before going into uniform even with previous ATC experience. As Plt_Off_Prune said, it isn’t compulsory but it can depend on where you are.
3 months probation as a CI needed and all paperwork signed off, plus DBS & first aid etc…
However, a Pre-uniform course is the perfect start for you. As the weekend (usually) is very useful and it and the staff on the course will help you discover areas in your knowledge that you may need to improve on (such as drill or ACO structure). A genuinely enjoyable weekend that should hopefully encourage you to progress further!
