Ambitions for 2026

With the end of 2025 approaching, and a successful thread on the topic last year, it’s time to reflect on what we hope to achieve for 2026.

2025 was certainly a unique year for me and took several twists that I didn’t see coming, from racing through the Andes, witnessing a couple of bombings, returning to the UK and also returning to advanced studies.

In 2026, I hope to relocate to a global city (London, Brussels or Geneva), advance my French (I think I’m about halfway to CEFR A1 standard right now) & Spanish (currently around B2) and, subject to my studies going well, secure a place on a Doctoral Training Partnership.

So, now the shortest day of the year has been and gone (or going), what’s on the horizon for the brighter days ahead?

More running and back to a bit of a sensible healthier lifestyle.

Continue to be without portfolio so I can swan around the various corners of the organisation causing havoc.

Actually finish my van tidying up so it is a semi finished product.

Not until October next year but

  1. Finish my PhD.
  2. Be installed into Master’s chair at my Lodge for the first time.
  3. Foster a closer relationship with local charities we’ve donated to (including the local ATC Sqn) via invitation to the meal after one of our meetings.
  1. Retire.

Just been medically upgraded so:

  • Pass the RAFFT (shouldn’t be too difficult, with the recent changes), and then
  • Overseas fun (whether a medal-earning tour or AT, which I could never do whilst downgraded).

Snap!

Learning French and learning to live in a mostly French-speaking area is going to be my biggest challenge of next year, I think.

I have done 50 days on Duolingo, but that’s it so far. I’m hoping once I live there I can get to A2 level fairly quickly, and look towards B2 within two years. Work will provide lessons which should help a lot!
