Hmmm. I don’t remember doing any of that on CIC. Stuff like that can be covered on squadron though, and is often best learned by doing.
Probably not (I didn’t do CIC), thinking more about what is useful.
I would love to a course stood up for SNCO’s gong commission - its been talked about for years, but never happened, it could easily be a 2 day course, which in theory could be run at region?
Although some don’t mind the travel and like the networking in person stuff. Mess regs although can be generically taught are displayed at the mess you are at and it’s not often that you go to a mess unless you are Wing/region staff or similar. My main thing was the travel, as well as my 4 hour drive down and back, there were people travelling from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Exeter, Cumbria and Dorset amongst others. I have done weekly of 2 corps camps, a regional one and a 3 Wing camps during my time up to now amongst the usual weekend stuff and have found the networking is better on camps than in the classroom environment at Cranwell. Training resource could be better kept within regions to cover all CFAV.
A HQ properly designed staff training package, delivered at a regional level, perhaps.
This this and this !
Don’t CIs use the sgts’ mess and chaplains the OM? If so, mess etiquette should be part of the ab initio training for these roles and not left until CIC.
Back before AVIP when it was the ‘basic course’, rough mess etiquette was covered in that. Not sure if it’s in the AVIP.
Indeed so. Though the chances of getting into a mess rather than transit accommodation is quite low these days.
It wasn’t on mine, but it shouldn’t have been either. Staff cadets don’t need it and neither would SIs (depending on rank it would either not be relevant or is something they should already know).
Its also not ideal that they usually cover that on day 1 when if you have had to travel the night before you have had 2 meals in the mess by that point.
We (as in my Wing) are meant to do a mess visit as part of the pre-uniform process.
Of course that doesn’t cover CIs staying in a mess for camp.
When I was on IMLC (now AD2) mess etiquette was the first item on the programme after arrivals admin, but some of us had been in acting rank for two years. We used to cover this off by introducing newly promoted SNCOs to the mess but, with the shortage of on camp accommodation, we’re usually in hotels these days and combined messing is often in effect at weekends.
I spent a night in the mess last weekend… I wouldn’t have coped without OIC given all the people we saw (0)
Might stop people getting up half way through a DIN
Covered as part of PUSC for my wing, don’t know if that is common elsewhere
I’m pretty sure the first time I actually ate in the mess was on my SCC. Everything else has been combined messing (or everything was closed), the JRM with the cadets, or transit accommodation.
We certainly do it
I’ve only ever stayed in the likes of Crowborough/Longmoor type accom. No fam needed
I’m literally being taking for coffee after my paperwork clears to do this.
People are only starting to filter in for ADP2 after about 18m at this point. So the training shortfalls aren’t specific to RAFAC. It’s 100% the whole TLB that’s suffering.
