ACO numbers/Stats...where do i start looking?

An odd one but something my mind would find interesting.

is there any quick and easy way of finding out the numbers of Cadet by Wing?

Short of surfing through BADER in the hope on the off chance to find a presentation or document indicating Wing Strength i am hoping there is an easier route.

the reason i ask i am wanting to produce a “distribution” map of Cadets around the UK, and specifically to match that distribution with RAF Stations/VGS/AEF bases.

with the shrinking RAF yet growing ATC/ACO i’m interesting to know the Catchment areas for Parent Stations and the VGS/AEFs…some VGS/AEF may only look after one region…but that could be 1/3 of the Corps for instance…while others cater for 3 or more regions yet only has 15% of the Corps.
i am also keen once i have that data to determine the distance (both physical and travelling time) to the nearest facilities for the “average” Cadet, maybe by region.

Spot on!! many thanks!

Great idea, but not necessarily practical. For example, our Wing has 6 Parent stations, 4 VGS, 2 AEFs assigned across 30 sqns; the sector I’m in covers 8 sqns, and is covered by 3 Parent stations, 3 VGS and 2 AEFs with non commonality between them!!

Our parent station will shortly have 4 wings!
(Those 4 wings share 3 VGSs and 1 AEF)

that does muddy the waters a bit!

the 4 wings to 1 parent station bit is what i am interested in.

this all spans from a state of apathy from the Cadet to commit, even to the good stuff, and it annoys me how they dont realize the opportunity the have on their door step particularly when compared to others in the Corps.
we have 4, large “key player” RAF Stations within an hour’s drive. our VGS and AEF is less than 30minutes away. RAF provided faculties are the norm for us, we can maintain a “blue” link…others need to use dark blue or green for the same facilities…or have to make do without even that!

i recall in when in a separate region travelling close to 3 hours on a coach to escort AEF only to sit there for 45mins while the fog failed to lift and turned back…i can understand a lack of interest if that was the norm but it isn’t for us, we get to use facilities almost on our doorstep

i know some, of which there are members here, who have a 2 hour drive to their parent station for kit, or for faculties like sports or training rooms, ranges and other such “norms” we get to enjoy

Share the love when you’ve done it!

It’s now quite out of date, but you might be interested in the map I made a while ago, which can be found in the archive.

My method of calculating the catchment areas (using a Voronoi diagram), and all the scripts and tools I used, are available in the second post.

Let me know if there’s anything I can assist with, as anything to do with mapping is right up my street.

Funny you say that, IIRC Kent Wing travel to 5AEF at Wyton, soon to be Wittering (at some stage); at which point 115 Sqn will have to go to Wittering (their Parent Station) to collect a vehicle to travel up to Cranwell (45 minutes away) for AEF…
