6 figure grid refference accuracy

Hi there,

I have relatively poor eyesight and am filling in my first class book from home.
I can see the maps and read them sort of good it just strains my eyes and I can’t quite see where exactly the points are.

How close can my estimations be for my 6 figure grid reference be before I start getting things wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here’s the best piece of advice I can give you if you’re worried about estimating your Grid Refs.

Don’t.

Measure them using a compass. Nearly all compasses have markings called roamers which are specifically designed for measuring grid references. Simply place the corner of the Roamer on the point, and read the markings that cross the grid lines. That gives you an accurate 6 figure reference.

Romer - Wikipedia.

Or use a ruler, which helps you understand how many cm on the map a km is

Thankyou, I will find a compass and do that :grinning:
