Had to put the kitchen chalkboard to use tonight after I found orange squash in one of my Guinness glasses………
My main concern is that this is IBN 22-07! What were the other 6 IBNs this year to come from beer command?
Does IBN stand for “Internal Beer Notice”
I take my beer very seriously…
The news reports about the red weather warning “it’s never happened before it’s that serious” well since the system only came into existence last year I’m not sure it’s such a big deal as that!
When you consider all the hype and warnings for the UK next week, in places I’ve been too for work and on holiday, that’s just a warm summers’ day.
Yes, but in other parts of the world it would be apocalyptic, so that’s not really relevant.
People also don’t appreciate the impact that our latitude has on heatwaves. We are further north than Sydney is south, so our summer days are two hours longer than their longest.
This means we have less cooling time at night than other places we would consider hot. We also have less acclimatisation, and poorer anti-heat infrastructure. Our homes are designed to seek out sunlight and hold heat.
We also don’t treat heat warily enough as a nation, always seeing it as a good thing, and taking the Mick out of it as a result.
All of that is a dangerous cocktail.
And, yes, red warnings are new, because they didn’t exist before. But 40 degree heat is new regardless.
The infrastructure here isn’t designed for this heat, it absorbs and traps it.
All I will say is that if the temp hits 38 degrees and 68% humidity it will suck. This is what I am forecast for Tuesday.
MML: This except from 'The Man With the Golden Gun:
Turns out all those evangelical types are doing in the conversion therapy camps is teaching those fine chaps the theme tune to The Bridge Over The River Kwai!
(I should probably make clear, what makes me laugh here is just how stupid the idea is!)
… i knew it…
Its amazing this even made it to print. Even in the 60s. What a load of tosh.
It was his last novel, and so far… it’s not great.
Yeah.
I read them all years ago, misses bought me the box set. I distinctly remember starting off thinking, this is great stuff, (asides from quite a few racist remarks), but by halfway the standard really dropped off.
The period continuation novels by Amis and Horowitz are much better. I can heartily recommend them.
Thanks!
On my list, need to get on and buy them…
Edit… sod it… amazon delivery tommorow…
I remember reading them at Uni, I did a module on popular culture 1950-present day and 60% of my marks was an essay on how James Bond had changed to stay relevant during that period.
The early Fleming books were very good, the gambling described in Casino Royale made you feel like you were there. But Man with the Golden Gun and The spy who loved me were particularly poor.
Edited to add this post has now made me start listening to James Bond Themes in the Kitchen.
I’ve never read the novels but I am an avid fan of the films (even got the VHS box set!). Might have to buy them and see how they compare.
Casino Royale is probably one of the closest to the books. Some are close, but really once Roger Moore took over the films went a completely different direction from the books.
After Fleming died, Kingsley Amis wrote one book with I think some of Fleming’s notes. After one more, which isn’t really a novel, the books became more akin to novelisations of the films, and book Bond moved with the times, rather than continuing his original timeline into old age. I haven’t read anything between Amis and 2008.
Then, in 2008, Sebastian Faulks took over and using Fleming’s unused stuff, went back and set his novel in the original Fleming canon. All the novels since then have fitted around the Fleming stuff and filled out some detail, one of Horowitz’ novels was a prequel which explains why he prefers rubbish martinis.
MML… this🤣
People hate to hear this but the best book was On Her Majesties Secret Service and the film was actually really good!
It also had my second favourite theme (after Live and Let Die).
