I know it’s no consolation but the jobsworths it MT steam the clams of every serving member of the RAF too. Apart from the travelling element we have to jump through all the same hoops. The latest incarnation is it now takes a full 5 days to fam somebody on a SWB landrover.
I’ve just been catching up on reading and I have been looking at a book called ‘The impact of war on the cadet movement’. One thing it revealed is that pre-WW1, cadet officers held a certificate from the Lord Lieutenant, not a Queen’s Commission.
Interesting, because that is one of the things which has been suggested for the future of CFAV officers…
Plus ca change, and all that.

Interesting reading as always. I am sure the powers to be keep an eye on this forum.
Is there a way to activate a poll to give a clear picture.
Keep current VRT Yes
Add SNCOs to VRT Yes
CIs pay claims No
CIs travel claims Yes
We can, but those options are wildly different in context from each other.
add put Officers into ATC alongside SNCO’s
Then say No to “Keep current VRT”
Heres another one… make WExOs completely civilian. Not like they need to be RAFR Sqn Ldrs.
Perhaps putting myself into the firing line here, but it was recently suggested to me by a relatively senior member of Wing staff, that the ACO would not want to bring SNCOs (ATC) into line with the VR(T) because, generally, the SNCO cadre had provided more staff/personnel issues and it was easier to remove them from the organisation because they fell purely inside the ACO CoC, rather than having to take the case to the AFB…
Cue heavy flak…
Not saying I agree with this, although recent events within my own wing and other local ones would tend to support this. Of course I caveat this by acknowledging that there are also the fair share of such issues caused by the VR(T) contingent of the organisation.
I’ve enjoyed reading this debate
For 25 years I held a Officers Commission in HM Customs & Excise.
Section 11 of the Customs & Excise management Act 1979 stated that :
" It shall be the duty of every constable and every member of Her Majesty’s armed forces or coastguard to assist in the enforcement of the law relating to any assigned matter."
Basically , As a Customs Officer, I outranked any member of the Police or Armed forces when it came to matter related to Customs (Excise, VAT, Smuggling…) I only needed ‘suspicion’, not firm evidence.
I did use Section 11 on the odd occasion to obtain ‘firepower’ - yes really.
On one job I needed armed assistance and the police were already over committed elsewhere . I had 200 fully armed Royal Marines at my command on one job- I only wanted 10 :woohoo: but they all wanted to tool up and play.
It was a power we used very carefully…
Officers, NCOs , CIs - they are all equally important - the ACO need them all. We are there to help Cadets acheive . If any of those joined for the pay or the status of the Commission or the RAF Cap badge then they should not have joined.
The never ceasing squabble of VRT -v- SNCO (ATC) gets on my wick.

I wish there was a true like button rather than an anonymous karma thingy
