Volunteer Software Development Team - New Cadet Portal

Sure, you could do that

And there is nothing technically wrong with that at all - Cadet Portal/SMS don’t care, they will send the notifications to that email address.

No, not at the moment. We are looking at announcements at the moment and how these can be created and displayed in Cadet Portal. We are not planning on providing you with mass emailing capability from SMS at this time.

That’s very kind, thank you and I will pass the message onto the team

Do I have to do it though, is my real question?
i.e. to authenticate are they required to have either a mobile number or a second email address listed? Or can they do it via the primary address?

SMS/Cadet Portal might not care, but the 21st century is pretty horrendously offended by it

@james_elliott I did a live demo to my cadets tonight to familiarise them with the system. Big smiles all round and they are really positive that it’ll be a big help in the future especially in regards to the uniform and drill tips. Oh and they liked the virtual brassard too (of course I never mentioned that I had that idea ).

In all seriousness though, fantastic work from you and the team. You’ve pleased the hardest crowd I know. Thanks for everything.

Thanks James, good to know I still have a job!

Went through our cadets contact details and noticed many don’t have email or mobile number, although the vast majority do have landline numbers. Our OC who wanted me to leave it to him means it’ll be a rush tonight to get emails added. Unfortunately I’m feeling a little icky so I won’t be able to attend the stress tonight

I take it those who do have an email address will have had an email yesterday from Cadet Portal and it’s just a case of them following the link to reset the password?

Gash drills from your OC. Just made life difficult for no reason.

Yes. Quite a few of mine are already on. One was super keen and had logged in by lunchtime…

Oh dear I’ve just had a message asking if I can make it in for an hour to get cadets set up on CP  I messaged back saying I’m unable to leave the house but if he emails me the cadets names and emails to the generic email I will sort it out for them. I’ve had no reply haha

I am taking a fairly hands-off approach to the release. I made sure cadet contact info was as up-to-date as possible, I advertised the cadet briefing video on our FB page and I am trouble-shooting as and when issues arise. When we get back after christmas I’ll see who has yet to log in and ask them how it is going.

While I intend to still support paper sign-up for activities, Portal will be the default and I hope that will encourage most people to use the system. I can’t force them to and I won’t be losing any sleep over it.

One of the biggest obstacles at the moment (we were in the recent tranche) is wing staff mis-using SMS, putting in incorrect or vague information, not getting things approved in time etc. It’ll come, but it really needs to come sooner than later.

An excellent resource indeed!

One of our cadets advised that the following is on the downloads page:

ā€œPupil Request to Attend Air Cadet Activitiesā€

I pray this is not abused ><

I seem to have Cadets from units that aren’t invited on SMS adding themselves to a First Aid Course via Cadet Portal!

Any ideas?!

Has a CP event link been sent out at all? I believe that will allow direct access for any with a CP account.

Can you ping the details to vdt@aircadets.org - that’s not supposed to happen!

It shouldn’t do - cadets should only be able to see events that their squadron has released to CadetPortal, or events to which the cadet has been added directly.

You are correct, it was a sub app of a main event that I couldn’t see on my SMS ā€œmy Eventsā€ list as the main event doesn’t have my Sqn added but the sub app does. Access was effected via direct CP link to the sub app (which is how I pushed via CP to the cadets) that had been sent in a warning order.

Wow. I can see how that can be confusing! When everyone is back after chrimbo we’ll discuss how to show this better!.

I think this is a genius way of managing events at Sqn level

Why print off paper using ink? Now if they had them all on an monitor

I think it’s great that when you go to print off a signup sheet from an SMS event, the QR code comes attached
