The Role of a Staff Cadet and the Upper Age Limit

A school operates on the same peer rules basis that allows 18 year old 6th formers. No difference to this and sports team or being classmates.

Am I not right in thinking that same peer exemption wonā€™t work for us, as our over 18s are closer to leaders than they are cadet? Thus need a DBS etc.

Quick google brings up this

An announcement has just gone out about upcoming changes! Albeit with no real informationā€¦

Weā€™re still 8 days away from the start of September, gotta give them time to change their minds againā€¦

Anyhow, where has this announcement been announced?

Itā€™s on the Sharepoint home page

So these changes are coming in less than two weeks.

It appears on the surface this will be a considerable change(s).

Yet instead of getting told what changes are happening, weā€™re just being told that they will happen and when.

Anyone want to start a sweepstake on when weā€™ll actually get the propper info?

1 Oct ā€¦ with digital changes needed I refuse to say what year, I got stung in that with Ultilearn which has only just demised.

So our wing is currently holding fire on staff cadet applications and DBS. We have events to organise in september and have no idea whether any of our most senior cadets can be counted or what their situation will be in two weeks time. The lack of comms over this seems insane.

From reading between the lines I feel the upcoming changes are significant. To the point that they really aught to have had 6 months notice or something, rather than what will end up being a weeks notice at best!

And the people such a thing is unfair on are the people most affected, the cadets.

Not even led by donkeys at this point.

I canā€™t put into words just how abysmally poor this is, and just how much contempt it demonstrates for everyone who has to deal with this on the front line with the most important group; parents.

People in HQ, we know youā€™re reading. Pull your fingers out of your collective orifices and actually tell us something useful so we can do the things you universally and repeatedly fail at; plan, and make it actually work.

The lateness of comms and lack of detail leads me to conclude this change can only be the one that would be easiest to implement: i.e. cadets can stay in after their 18th birthday with no action required, other than CWOs, FSCs, etc. (Possibly with the option of others becoming staff cadets by going through the existing rigmarole: if required for ratios, female cover, etc.)

Iā€™ve been here long enough to know that that level of optimism is naive at best

The easiest to implement will be no 18plus cadets. Those cadets already wanting to stay on should already be in the process.

A guillotine with a provision for this already in to continue would be the simplest & the easiest for HQ to implement & less legally risky.

Yeah, that would be pretty simple to be fair. But I donā€™t think thatā€™s the plan!

That may well be the easiest for HQ, but not for units planning to make use of their most senior cadet NCOs on the other side of their upcoming 18th birthdays.
