“Politics of envy” is a distasteful non-argument.

I never hear socialism knocked when it comes to funding the military, or other things the ultra rich can’t sort for themselves (or make money from).

I would argue that socialist ideas about Defence procurement being about protecting British jobs rather than procuring the best bang for our buck is what led to the L85A1.

I’d agree.

That’d come under “socialism for the rich / socialism for businesses”, which again, like when Covid payments were for everyone, seemed to fall under acceptable socialism.

Oh dear, socialism is a nasty wicked creed, the mirror image of fascism, which between them have murdered millions. Capitalism does not need walls barbed wire fences concentration camps to keep people under control.

Have you ever been to Berlin where both creeds are remembered, Sachsenhausen just an hour for the Brandenberg Gate on the S/U Bhan and Hoenschoenhausen just a tram ride from Alexanderplatz. Both places of depravity and example of both creeds, preserved as a warning from history.

That was not acceptable socialism but a way for the country to survive in a world crisis.

I would argue it was largely a mistake that wouldn’t be acceptable to repeat.

Correction:

It was socialism that helped you, because you were experiencing an existential crisis.

I hate to break it to you, but the people who often rely on the safety net, or find landlords increasing their rent by £400pcm on a whim, face existential crises every day. To them, the struggle is all they think about.

It just doesn’t affect you, and you’re unable to imagine what it must be like, because how could you?

You can’t pull yourself up by your bootstraps when you don’t have bootstraps.

And political ideologies are very easy to co-opt and abuse. If you have powerful autocrats running the show, how they decide to mistreat their populations doesn’t really matter. It just so happens that stripping them of wealth or opportunity is a very easy way to keep them down.

Wouldn’t have called feudal Britain “socialism”, but it looked just as rubbish for the people at the bottom.
