The blue to gold is for the level reached, regardless of weapon. You could get gold on the air rifle, or blue on the L98. To quote the previous thread:

Now blue is the equivalent of Trained Shot on any rifle.
Bronze is the equivalent of Marksman on any rifle.
Silver is the equivalent of Advanced Marksman on any rifle.
Gold is the equivalent of Competition on any rifle.
