Agreed and a quick and fair solution would be rank and roles are combined.
Ie only a Fg Off can organise the range day and FS do the lesser role thus VA reflects both on and off activity responsibilities
But of course that is a pants idea as those busy at then top will not have chance to do anything additional and will put off CFAV wanting to progress through the ranks with the expectation that only senior ranks can do senior roles
The miss-match between Sqn roles and event roles is always going to be present providing VA is only available from claims via activities.
An alternative might be 13 days VA simply paid for Sqn Stuff…its paid at the beginning-middle-end ofthe year either as a block or 4 days at a time with the remaining 16 days available via event claiming…
…but that wouldn’t work as those 12 days would become “regular pay” and closer to being employed.
Given OCs don’t take on the role to get rich (indeed no CFAV puts the uniform on or strives for promotion to get rich) as volunteers we should accept that any additional or extra responsibility we might have above our colleagues be that in senior position or role we did so voluntary so not sure why that should be considered during events VA.
Turning up to event or not those responsibilities are still held and the tasks related to that role completed. Neither they are related to VA or VA related to them
Which is exactly why this role related pay is such BS.
Your a Squadron Commander and therefore a Flt Lt if you give up an additional day on top of all of the work you do day to day you get paid at a Flt Lt rate. If the FS wants to get paid at the Flt Lt rate there is a solution, get a Commission and run a unit.
Does anyone really have the time? We fit things around our real life and the demands of this are not at all linked to whatever role you have in a hobby and as it a hobby people tend to do the things that interest them personally. Hence I’m into walking and camping, which is what I do.
Historically there wasn’t the issue with many things as you didn’t need the qualifications and the peripheral training imposed upon us now. So life was easier as a volunteer.
Being a Sqn Cdr while yes takes up time you have to manage it, part of this is delegation. Any Sqn Cdr who doesn’t delegate is not doing themselves any favours, unless they are one of the poor sods who has very few staff and does things by default. I have all staff doing something to easy the day to day requirements and some of these do more than one thing, including CIs. As a Sqn Cdr you owe it, to your sanity if nothing else, to do something, otherwise you would lose the will. Perhaps a reason why so many leave.
