I’ve been in a number of Wings who try this with different success. Most notable was a “SNCOs mess”
The CMC waa the WWO and intention was to have quarterly socials. Something like a curry night at one end of the wing or bowling at thr next the following occasion with some summer BBQ and Christmas meal at the obvious times
Fell down when the attendance was low. Ok of you’re single and happy to travel an hour on a Friday night for a curry to join other SNCOs but when you only know the face and name and conversation typically is centres around one thing given the lack of other common interests its no wonder it died before it even got going
We do ‘team’ socials, quick change into civvies and down the pub after a course has finished. Or sometimes we get a take away for the directing staff after.
The number of anti-social wing socials I’ve gone to over the years has kinda put me off a little.
I don’t do cliques & I remember sitting in the mess bar one evening an asking myself on why I was spending time their with some of them.
I don’t mind occasional socials but it’s more colleagues not friends.
That’s a bit rubbish. I’ve (so far) had the reverse experience. Make any excuse to not go, avoid as many as possible - but when I do go I always enjoy myself.
Bit like camp. In the run up I dread it, ask myself why I said yes, but love it when I get there.
