Proposal to change joining age to Year 8

Don’t iron creases into your PCS. Unless you’re on II Squadron who are so unique and special they have to constantly do things to show how unique and special they are… (Like being II rather than 2)

They don’t need to tell you not to in dress regs, because they don’t tell you to. If you look under the bits on trousers in all the other sections, wherever they want you to put creases in, they tell you. There’s also a bit (I think) in the general section on not ironing creases into things unless you’re specifically told to, to prevent ‘unnecessary wear and tear’.

And now I feel like a sad person.

Christ on a bike. They’ll want creases in our pink tutu’s next!

I’m still waiting for someone to reply to my e-mail re: tutu starching…

I read your dress regs. It tells you to iron creases in for other orders of dress, but not for MTP PCS. That should be a clue!

I skim read and couldn’t see anywhere that said that you cannot go around with a parrot on your shoulder, but that doesn’t mean you can or should!

As above. PCS is quite hard to iron creases in to so it makes sense not to.

If you want to iron creases into CS95 then go for it, but you shouldn’t be penalised for not having them.

PCS do not require creases to be ironed in. For CS95, on ACS we were told that if creases were there then they should be sharp, but creases were not mandatory. I think they were just trying to avoid half-hearted attempts!!

I was always told “Theres no straight lines in nature…” Failing that I used to have a “camp set” and “field set”.

It might be worth saying that just because you dont Iron creases doesnt mean you dont iron it at all!

Slightly off topic but can someone quote the Dress regs on wearing MTP? Am I correct in saying it should be worn untucked and sleeves rolled down?
And is “evening wear” that starts at 1700 and that sleeves should be rolled down for this time?

I am away and cant get access to any documentation.

I’ve never heard of ‘Evening wear’! This sounds like a local instruction.

The original rules for PCS was to wear it untucked and sleeves rolled down, but many (Army) officers disliked this, so you now wear PCS in accordance with local instuctions. Here at RAF Marham, PCS is worn with the shirt tucked in, and you may roll the sleeves up if you wish (and can manage it!).

It is a very old instruction that I believe* was brought in for the comfort of those posted to more humid climates, as mosquitoes like to venture out in the evening. Sleeves rolled down in the evening reduced the chance of getting bitten, at least of the arms. I have no idea how many routinely observe this anymore. I keep my sleeves rolled up all the time between 01 May to 31 September which are our traditional shirt sleeve order dates. With the new rules regarding PCS, it is pretty much down to local direction at all times.

*This is what I have been told, but don’t have documentary evidence.

The dates 01 May for 31 Sep refer to the old summer dress and winter dress. This is still observed by the Army, although the RAF are allowed to make their own mind up!!

I knew I heard it somewhere. Couldnt place it though that sounds familiar to what I was told too.
Evening wear on ships as far as I am aware is a shirt with working day dress being a military/unit green t shirt.

Theres still some units I beleive that during winter months wear JWH’s (Jersey Wool Heavy) I have to say it looks quite smart.

As for PCS just cut those damn velcro patches out. I know lads to cut the entire pocket off. I dont know one person that likes/approves of them! And I have heard rumours of the new sets not even having them.

Everyones obsessed with damn velcro. Its just an annoyance. Its not “ally”.

I did that as soon as I got the shirt. Carefully unpicked the velcro and sewed the pocket up nice and neatly so you can’t see the thread. The new shirts do indeed come sans lower arm pockets. Still waiting for them to become available in my size though as they are all in midget size.

Velcro is a nightmare!! Just try to open a pocket covertly!!!

It would scare the enemy into thinking a squad was traversing a gravel road?

Just for everyones info - results from the survey are now on Bader Sharepoint

Survey: ATC Cadet minimum joining age.

For those of us that don’t have ready access to sharepoint, would someone be so kind as to post the result?

Yes 75% or possibly 84% because of the strange way the results are.

I think its a good idea lowering to Year 8.

For a start, it will make recruitment so much easier, if you can get into a school and do an assembly for the year 8’s early in the academic year, you can start by saying you can all join, age isn’t a problem.

I don’t see the age limits on other activities being a problem. As has been said before, a certain level of maturity is needed for some activities, and this should remain. It also gives the Cadets something to work towards, aim towards, and indeed look forward too. With the right Cadet, surely this will only encourage them to remain as a Cadet longer than the average 18 months at present?

Also, with having a potential extra year as a Cadet, and assuming our Senior Cadet and post 18 situation remains the same, if Cadets stay for the full term, we will have a larger cadre of senior Cadets who can be used in a more management role in the Squadron, assisting the Staff (which we now have a lot less of as another thread informs us!)

As for the differing age and maturity bit, well I was born in August, so was always the youngest, and saw many many friends have access to all kinds of things (driving, moped riding, drinking, full bore shooting, overseas camp etc etc) but it didn’t bother me, such is life, my time came, I got on with life, so I’m afraid I don’t think the argument about the age gap across year 8 is valid. As for age and maturity in general, I have had a few Cadets I simply would not allow anywhere near a rifle at any age! And when the Sea Cadets rather successfully take their ‘Juniors’ at 10.5 years, are we actually well behind the times?

By the way, full bore shooting age limit has gone. L98 now any age. New ACTO came out last Friday.

That’s very interesting…I wonder when the SATTs are going to tell us that…?
