Organising a Squadron Dinner

[quote=“Operation Nimrod” post=4894]By “mess-like” do we mean smell funny, full of wood panelling, young hyperactive junior members and old cantankerous men?

I genuinely don’t mean to be rude or anything, but have you considered just not having a squadron dinner?

In my experience they’re great for the CivCom and parents who get to feel important (and always have time to turn up for it despite never being seen on Remembrance or Battle of Britain Sunday, but that’s another thread…) and they’re super for the hasbeens and wannabes who get to play Air Force, but the cadets all spend the evening bored out of their minds and looking miserable.

You’ve clearly got an odd bunch of cadets as almost every single one of the cadets that attends our Sqn Dinner can’t wait for the next one… Perhaps its because of the after dinner disco, or the careful selection of an entertaining Mr Vice to entertain them after the top table has left, or maybe cadets just like dressing up and doing something different for once!

Plus its always funny when one of them drops food down their uniform!

Even funnier when the OC does it. Or calls one of the Distinguished guests by the wrong title…

Our Dining ins tend to be a relaxed affair - Local Rugby Club, 3 course meal to which parents, RAFA and other guests are invited, followed by Annual Presentation Night, Raffle and paper plates, ending with Cadets going home/wherever the parents want to take them, and Staff going to the local public house 50 yards down the road for a quiet/noisy* few/many* before crawling home in the early hours.

We’ve tried all sorts of stuff, but this format got the best feedback from the cadets…

Can’t argue with empirical evidence. Maybe your dinners are better run than the ones I attended. Or maybe the cadets involved are just different types or people.
