Nightly Duties
If they’d told us to wear a peak cap or carry a BFO stick, would we have done it? Hell yes! And we’d have climbed over each others corpses for the privledge and been the best damn duty NCOs the corps has ever seen.
And thus, the crux - we need to protect the children from themselves. Thats the whole point of having rules and regulations. Developing discipline, which in turn develops self-discipline, which means when the children go out into the big bad world, they have a fighting chance of being ever so slightly better than the next person.

The throbbers who introduce such acoutrements need a good shoeing imho.

A list on the wall works fine every time and doesn’t introduce the “I am better than you because I am wearing a No1 SD hat” attitude…

The thing is…

In my experience, that’s exactly how the world works.

I went on an exercise once where the best cadet of the day got to wear “The Hat of Glory” A plastic viking helmet with an ATC Cap badge stuck on it. Boy did we want that hat!

(They also had the rucksack of stupidity, or similar, which was about 15cm2 and bright pink. We didn’t want that.

Remember, the ATC is for the kids, not the geeks who like to pore over dress regs and slag off the people they can ‘catch out’. As long as it doesn’t get to the point viking helmets or Indian war paint, who cares if people want to have fun?
In this instance I’m suddenly massively in favour of viking helmets…

I didn’t write that.

Nope, you didn’t, sorry my bad.

Each night we do the following:

Sweep all floors
Shut and lock all windows
Tidy canteen, including washing up
Check toilets are clean
Lock all lockable doors
Set all heaters to correct setting
Turn all lights off
Empty the bins - including putting the bin out on the appropriate day
Turn off all PCs and printers.

Our Duty NCO is responsible for the timings on a parade night. They will tell the others when to get on parade, when to move to the first half, when break starts, when it stops, when to move to the 2nd half and when to form up for final parade. They take 2 cadets to run canteen and make teas and coffees whilst they take payments from other cadets for their sweets etc. They are in charge of the register at the starg of the evening and giving out duties at the end of it.

My god, an on topic post!

Ours are supposed to do all of the above, although we have no power over our heaters as ther are run by the TA centre and I can’t even get the staff to remember tht the PC’s have an off switch.
I can’t even get the staff to remember tht the PC’s have an off switch.
Ha! How familier!

I can be sure of pretty much all bar one of the PCs being turned off, but everyone forgets the bloody monitors and printers.

Lets make sure we stay back on topic hey gents?

So on my Squadron, we have 4 duties.

 1. Duty SNCO (Sgt)
 2. Duty JNCO (Cpl)
 3. Duty Admin (Cpl)
 4. Duty NCO Room (Cpl/Sgt)

The ‘duty NCO room’ role is NCO who cleans the NCO room that evening. We do not make the Cadet clean the NCO or staff rooms as it’s our mess, we shall clean it.

Duty Admin is responsible for updating Bader SMS registers. That is all.

The Duty JNCO is responsible for taking the register as Cadet’s walk in the door, an inspection upon arrival, getting Cadets into the necessary areas for the activity. Issuing the cleaning jobs and inspecting cleanliness after jobs have been completed.

The Duty SNCO is to supervise the other duty personnel and standard check the Cpl’s. Assist if required.

Whilst all this is going on the other Cpl (We have 4) runs stores issuing kit/equipment. The FS is the liaison between staff and Cadets and therefore does not have any additional duties. Staffs are to make their own drinks of an evening.

Should we have any NCO’s not doing alot they are encouraged to mingle with the troops and get to know them or help them with uniform and drill or other tricks and tips.

I’m sure there is alot more to it but all I can think of right now.

To identify the Duty JNCO & SNCO they wear a white belt (Only the two main jobs wear this)
