Leading Cadet Exam

Level 3 is an A Level equivalent, our BTEC is Level 2 a GCSE equivalent, but the question is what do merit or distinction mean in terms of grade.

On the whole the Ultilearn subjects and exams for leading are much like the old paper ones at leading cadet level, the only difference being that the material for Airmanship II (and Military Aircraft Systems at Sen/Mas) is ten years out of date rather than twenty.

At least cadets will be learning about all of the important RAF platforms and weapons like Nimrod, Harrier, Sea King, VC10, Tristar, ALARM, Maverick, Skyflash and Sidewinder… not to mention Merlin and Harpoon which are at least still in UK service, albeit not with the RAF.

There’s been so much back-and-forth over the whole thing that I’ve lost track.
What qualification are they actually awarded these days and at what stage?

Although many use the term “BTEC” to suggest otherwise, it isn’t actually a qualification. BTEC (now Edexcel) is simply an awarding body.

It is BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Aviation Studies provided by Pearson where the only grade achievable is a PASS and is marked by the nine exams you take for the qualification
