I wonder if the costings reflect the fact that a school based unit doesn’t need any infrastructure, maintenance and associated administrative costs, required by community units, that are absorbed by the school. Also if schools are able to use education money for cadets, it is a cost hidden from the defence side.[/quote]
According to DYER (which apparently uses an earlier study based on the financial year 2009/2010):
ATC COSTS PER CADET PER YEAR
Detachment/Squadron/unit costs: £209
Activity Costs: £243
Regional Support Structures: £100
Volunteer Pay: £211
Training overhead: £217
Management, monitoring, admin: £63
Marketing/Advertising: £6
CCF COSTS PER CADET PER YEAR
Detachment/Squadron/unit costs: £27
Activity Costs: £133
Regional Support Structures: £47
Volunteer Pay: £91
Training overhead: £198
Management, monitoring, admin: £82
Marketing/Advertising: £0
ACF COSTS PER CADET PER YEAR
Detachment/Squadron/unit costs: £434
Activity Costs: £251
Regional Support Structures: £411
Volunteer Pay: £294
Training overhead: £123
Management, monitoring, admin: £187
Marketing/Advertising: £11
Among other things, why are the ACF detachment/squadron/unit costs (Rent, Repairs & Maintenance, Rates, Heat & Light, IT support) twice the size of the ATC?
The obvious banter response would be that they break more things than the ATC
In my local area it seems that the ACF have more units but that they are generally smaller in terms of cadet numbers than ATC units, on average. That, and aging infrastructure, could contribute to the disparity. Any newer (more efficient) cadet units have tended to be shared facilities and will constitute a better use of resources.

i think that sounds right.
in the 5 Squadrons i have been in on four different Wings the local ACF has never been an equal size, typically half or a little more so than the ATC.
as this is a “per Cadet” cost that would explain that cost.

The unit I have been with for nearly 25years our building (spooner hut) has been painted internally twice and externally once. the ACF unit beside us which has the same type of spooner hut has been painted several times internally and every 3 years externally over the same period RFCA says its because they have a different budget for ATC/ ACF and the army give them more for the upkeep
