Gliding "paused"

That’s mine sent in - pretty much word for word (thanks for doing the leg work!).

Would be nice to see a large number of MP’s all querying with the same issue at the same time (I suppose Parliament has ways of making sure that doesn’t happen though…)

The more the merrier.

It can done many ways - via a Minister, or, to set out a written PQ.

I shall have a look in the Lords too to see if there is anyone with a listed / related interest.

Slightly altered my version - but not drastically, thanks for the start - and sent to mine too. She’s a rabid Labour bod so will probably enjoy a chance to slap down the MoD…

For those interested, in the House of Lords reading through the following debate (not related directly to gliding) I would suggest contacting both Baroness Garden of Frognal (06:46 timeline in debate) and Lord Tunnicliffe (06:51) based on their positions/ experience and concern for the Cadets.

(Please do not thread drift this one on the debate)

For Background Info:

An extract (my bold):

…" In April 2014 all Air Cadet Organisation gliding was paused due to airworthiness concerns with the Grob Viking conventional glider and Grob Vigilant motorglider fleets utilised by the Air Cadet Volunteer Gliding Squadrons (VGS).

Substantial operational, technical and commercial negotiations with a range of aerospace leaders in this field have failed to find a value for money approach to successfully repair and recover all 146 gliders. Consequently a comprehensive Air Cadet Organisation review has proposed restructuring this activity. It has been decided that the best value for money solution is to recover at least 73 Vikings, a reduced Vigilant fleet of up to 15 aircraft, combined with an uplift to Grob Tutor fixed wing Air Experience Flights (AEFs)."

From the recent announcement it would seem that the negotiations were not “substantial” enough!!!

A few possibilities as named in the recent RFCA Short Debate in the Lords; look for the comments by Baroness Garden of Frognal, I’ve pinged her a line:

It is a source of concern that air cadets have been woefully short of actual flying. There have been problems with both gliders and training aeroplanes, such that many air cadets have missed out on the air part of their cadetship. Can the Minister say if these problems have now been sorted? Are air cadets now able to gain glider and pilot licences, as my husband was?

Another possible “interest group” is the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Armed Forces

Didn’t think we kept any in the end?

We didn’t, but the original plan was to have a sqn at Syerston for some reason or other.

With 2FTS based at Syerston, a Vigilant sqn would be a nice showpiece for them to say look what we do BS BS BS BS to any visitors.

No it wasn’t! The 15 were to have a Squadron at Topcliffe and woodvale two sites that cant easily take Vikings (topcliffe) and one that can’t at all (woodvale) a small number would be at Syerston for instructor training.

645 at topcliffe was the first Sqn to RTF on the vigilant and flew cadets post pause

One of the things that gets me is that Halton was Vigilants and so therefore shut as it wasn’t suitable for Vikings.

But the BGA manage to run out of the same airfield.

Vigilant costs have never been identified separately by the MOD

Saywhaaaa?

I smell BS

Aah, ok. I thought I’d read something about a centre of excellence or some such tomfoolery.

Just to save anyone else looking up the response - not that there is anything to read of substance!

I recall this phrase and I seem to recall Middleton’s name was mentioned steering it?

Syerston as the “home” of gliding would give itself the name “centre of excellence” as the mecca for gliding- ie the central training school where the instructors got trained.

If the VGS had the kit then Syerston would train on it.

Read this on FB the other day.I am so glad im no longer part of this organisation.Middleton was a disgrace as RC North with all the charisma of a pork pie.He visited a sqn I was on some years back as we had two top of the line flight sims(he wanted them). He spoke to me as if I was something on his shoe so I paid him back in full. His interest in the cadets themselves during the visit was nil.He is without doubt the worst man ive ever encountered.Or in the immortal words of Spock"its life but not as we know it".
When he was sent to 2FTS I knew it would cause problems but this latest kick in the slats is really the last straw.I feel for every cadet and serving staff member who has to put up with this.As ever though no one will be to blame and no one will resign. These people have no honour.

Spock never actually said that.

Perhaps not but he would have recognised Middleton for the form of life he is.
