FTI Non Restricted Qual for Cadets

With this in mind, I would propose;

  1. Fieldcraft Instructors Course and qualification; focusing purely on lesson delivery, skills and tactics (suitable for Cadets)
  2. Fieldcraft Exercise Conducting Officer course and qualification; focusing on planning and overall delivery.

At the risk of thread drift, this is one of the biggest drawbacks of the O18 policy as it now stands. Previously I could have had a staff cadet as an assistant but still count for ratios on FT, Or in my AOR, to teach.

Now I need CFAV to meet the ratios meaning that if staff cadets are teaching the CFAV are more or less surplus to requirements, except for ratios. Or they’re teaching in which case we don’t need the staff cadets!

So in one sentence you say you have years of experience and then the next say you don’t know the policy and don’t have a copy of it…

If you have issues with how it’s written then feed it back using the CoC or if it’s issues with the document then there is a military skills feedback form.

The policy goes via several different levels of review including socialisation with Regions and Wings prior to release.

There is about to be another review so if there are any changes that are required then now is the time to raise them.

Conflating experience with currency is a dangerous game to play.

I would encourage you to read my message in the order it was written - at no point have I criticised the writing of a document I’ve not read.

I’ve been given a copy of ACP 16 Vol 2, so that I can understand the scope of the fieldcraft that can be delivered to our CCF(RAF) Section.

I am not a member of RAFAC, so cannot feedback through your recommended means.

Oddly enough, that’s the system we used to have and moved away from.

The last Bronze FC I was involved in, had some lessons, such as obstacle crossing and cam & concealment delivered by FTI(R)s (a CFAV and a JL cadet) but a full FTI was supervising. I believe the ACP allows this and gave the small team of FTIs a break from actively delivering.

With a quick refresher session, they could easily exercise the ā€˜planning and conduct’ element and be appointed as Activity Owner. It’s an opportunity to further invest in our cadets and to take advantage of their relative enthusiasm and availability of time. Assuming they stay as CFAVs, they will be more experienced in instruction, and it means they get qualified before life becomes more complex with uni / first jobs / relationships / children. That translates to more time instructing, giving greater delivery capacity. It is also a light way to start that transition to being a staff member, and is likely of value to the cadet in terms of life experience … think of those job interview competency-based questions and how they might be able to talk about ā€˜responsibility’, coaching, time management, etc., questions more confidently and in a way that stands out. DofE is wonderful, but this is more differential. It’s also of relevance to our parent Service and other Services, giving an advantage to both the cadet, as a prospective recruit, and to the Service in de-risking recruitment and training.
