'Flying Operations' Syllabus

As before, the original plan was to have two versions: one self-led and one instructor-led. The latter didn’t happen (and you will never know the scale of what didn’t happen across the entire project, not just this one subject)!

However, I believe this version can still be used for instructor-led delivery. It’s just not optimised for it.

But we don’t. We focus on computer skills* and have for a few years, certainly since before the the pandemic.

I disagree. I am an HQ IT geek but firmly believe in the absolute importance of f2f and practical training. There is a place for online stuff to save time, resources, etc, and to enhance interactivity in certain cases.

Generally, however, give me a whiteboard, a rifle, and a training area (all at once if you’d like!). Just don’t give me a Viking :exploding_head: … unless you retrofit an engine.

Point: ‘HQ’ is in technicolour! Please don’t dull us all with your brushes.

Ok, I get that not everyone is the same. But it certainly seems that the majority of senior bods want us to go that way

It amazes me that we’re doing more and more online, yet our wing ‘Astra Breifing Day’ is being done in person. An event that arguably suits perfectly for an online conference. I can’t go, because I’m away. Had it been online I’d probably have popped in for a couple of hours! I swear is just too get some people a few more paid days or something?!

A whole day devoted to what could be at most a 30 min teams briefing?

More than likely. It’s in place of the annual staff conference. You know the ones where you do break out sessions for 3 hours discussing how to improve X, Y and Z and then never see our hear anything more about it. Really should be a teams thing imo.

Unless your wings being dissolved & broken up so it would be its last opportunity to get together as a wing. I can then understand the mentality of saying “sod it we’ll do it as a face to face & burn a piano at the end”.

The way forward (for conferences & training) is a hybrid approach - online to get the widest reach, face to face for technical/nuanced activities.

I dont know how to quote into other threads… sorry.

Are any wings being fully ‘dissolved and broken up’?

Yep and words

I’ll probably get the same “PFO” option as I did from the Wg Radio Off - need to do the cse as you’re not qualified… :man_facepalming:

PFO???

“Please go off.”

(Except it’s not “go” of course.)

I was under the impression guidance from the top was conferences should ideally be virtual going forward.

They can be face to face as long as there is a training element rather than just a get together.

I understand the view from the top, it saves time and money but I really think it’s short sighted with regards to networking and picking up best practice.

Yeah agree on thr latter points… But then brucey bonus if i get a couple of hours extra in bed, can keep the pjs on and just leave the camera off

I’ve just noticed that Flying Operations includes the phonetic alphabet which we teach them during Basic Radio.

What’s the logic behind teaching cadets something twice in first class?

I’ll also add great chance for stamps in a book.

Once upon a time before the pandemic shooting logs (F7257) and MOD driver’s licence (FMT600) were signed off at our Wing conferences.

It was never a “catch all” but certainly “catch most” and saved a lot of agro on both sides of the signature

A question I asked over and over and over. That’s the specification and that’s what we had to make. You have my sympathy. I only hope you only actually need to teach it once …

Would these be the new wings for the course?
