Flight Simulator

Most likely there are none, and the ones that we did have were from an entrepreneurial staff member many years ago.

I quite agree, hence why I always offer up the lesson plans I did for the scholarships to anyone doing flight sims, as that was far too many hours of my life that I should have used studying!
Here in LASER they have put together the AEROSPACE CONFERENCE which it would be nice to see some sort of “specification” to come out of it.

Is it possible I could have a copy? I have got the kit together but not got the training ready yet. Thanks

Absolutly,

If you go to 2158.co.uk and log in using the Username: Aircadetcentral and the Password: VentureAdventure
You should be greeted with the flight sim training page, all the lesson plans etc are on there.
If you want word formats I can have a dig around (sure I have them somewhere)

With regards to X-Plane 10 have you looked at the Steam version running on Linux?

I have it and it runs perfectly, it’s around £60, and using Linux saves you the cost of buying windows.

PC Specialist also provide a great service on custom built PCs and can be supplied without an OS. (£79 saving)

Cheers

CH product discounts = 10%. This was reply direct from supplier rather than HQACO input.

Reference Linux - good idea, but no, based on the probability of expanding the PCs for other options (as yet unknown).

Ohh awesome, is that a particular code for the discount?

In terms of Linux, I would agree with using it apart from in terms of training new people to manage the system. The old sim I built doesn’t get used much as far as I’m aware despite all the resources I made for it, and that’s just win7 and fsx. So I dread to think how little people would want to use Linux.

I agree, but if you can save £80 then that could be used to get a better CPU or more RAM!

Linux is now very friendly and uses less resources than windows. So again you get more power for your money. With the advent of Win10 the learning curve for switcing to either is now very similar!

Just my 2 penneth but if it were me, I’d be taking a serious look at something other than windows.

Discounts - no code, I just asked them directly what they could apply to our sqn (as a youth organisation) for buying the ancillaries (possibly 3 of each in our case).

Linux - no arguments about how good it could be, or possible cost savings. For the PC package that we might go for, Windows = pre-loaded, & the CP, etc, are all top end. Obviously, for self-build or “spec to buy” options, this might be advantageous. I’m also wary that some of the software “maintenance” might fall on the shoulders of the less “tech-savvie” = Windows might be more user friendly in that respect.

Just had the first opportunity to log-in & have a quick look at the lessons plans (I’m currently doing my 6 monthly refresher “torture” sessions in the simulator = slightly busy at times!).

They look to be ideal for the purpose & must have taken quite some while to produce = a perfect example of sharing something in order for others to benefit from all the hard work - staff won’t have to slave away to duplicate the work, & cadets can utilise a well though out “product.”

Slightly off topic, but if you’re willing you could pop the files into the new ACC Drive?

Available to everyone then

Cheers

Yeah I can put them up in the ACC Drive, I know that 2158 will be replacing their site soon so a new solution was needed.

I completely agree with everything you said about using Linux, just my confidence in others stops me. Maybe I’ll try it when I get a chance.

Nice  pop me a PM and I’ll add you to the access list for Drive editing.

Linux is worth a try  I use it full time and I now can’t get my head round Windows anymore - so unintuitive!!

as for a site replacement don’t forget we provide a free service or there’s sqn.ac - great deals available </shameless plug>

Oh absolutely, I use linux as well, well debian and ubuntu mainly.
I’ve managed to have a computer at the sqn with ubuntu, and most using libreOffice, small steps, small steps.
Ohh aye, I’d noticed the sqn.ac hosting (the ads were really subtle) and had set up an account for the sqn, but stuck with google sites for now.

The word versions would be great - thanks

I didn’t go for Linux as these are also being used for other things by other users

You’ll have to wait out, I’m afraid I don’t have them right now, away from home. I am sure I have them back home. I’ll upload them to the new ACC drive for people to use.

Yeah it’s my only concern about Linux is not trysting others to be able to adapt to it.

Found the word doc versions.
Word and PDF versions are now available on the ACC Drive

Enjoy.

Reply from HQACO, no known discount(s) that they are aware of:

All the RAC sims were supplied by RC SIMULATION.

Yes I do believe it was quite some years ago so no surprises there.

Yes the RAC sims that I’ve heard cost something silly like £10000 each. Fine for RAC’s maybe but squadrons don’t need and/or can’t afford something that expensive.
If we were to put together a “recommended specification” for flight simulators here on the ACC Drive, aiming for ~£500 sims we could really help a lot if cadets get into flying.

£10,000!? Blimey! You could build your own identical setup for a fraction of that!
I’m clearly in the wrong job… I should be building mediocre simulators and flogging them for a fortune.

Ok turns out I was slightly over-exaggerating from memory . . . looking at their website it looks like it might be more like <£5000

From their website (Date estimate - 2007 - 2009):
The concept in the design was as follows: The controls, seat and construction should be as
durable as was possible and in a similar layout to an aircraft. The graphics and the flight model should be reasonably representative of the environment and the type of aircraft that cadets might fly.
The computer was to be custom built to be reliable and have sufficient computing and graphics power to drive 3x24" monitors for fluid out of the window views plus one additional monitor to use as an instrument panel, GPS or as required. So as not to need to rely on a keyboard or mouse to operate the simulator, items such as trimmer, landing gear, flaps, radios and engine start switches were to be operated via avionic panels called Go-Flight.
Their “new” Cadet range of controls are priced at ~£2000, so combined with 4 24" monitors, the high end pc, the other instrument panels and the seating ect £5000 is probably likely.
