Changes to RAFAC Sports

Nope it’s selling off all the Region Kit that was bought and barely used.

Something that’s just crossed my mind is how this change will impact delivery of the new Sports Leaders Award (SLA).

This year, courses are meant to be delivered at region level and above, yet we’re seeing these levels now being dismantled.

So have HQAC just shot themselves in the foot and made it almost impossible for units to be able to provide sports for themselves?

Being very factious about that slide - it looks like they’ve skipped to the end & just gone for “no delivery at Sqn level”

As such HQAC project officer has delivered the sports end state three years ahead of schedule so well done old boy & it can be tea & medals all round.

We dont have a problem with cadets! Its staff we cannot get because it takes so long for them to go through all the hoops!

Is that joining? We are down to 8 weeks from walking through the door to having notifications down from HQAC. Process is nice and easy compared with a few years ago.

Traditionally our Wing have had separate Wing events

Wing training/competition Day
Athletics
Wing sports (Football, hockey etc events)
Cross Country
Swimming.

That was at least 5 days. Swimming has dropped off which I agree with.

Personally I think you could make a more successful Wing Sports Day adding additional sports/removing some of the Athletic events but keep it at just Wing Level for sports, even the possibility of joining it into the Wing Competition Day could be an option.

The main problem for us which is understandable, is the restrictions on the amount of events a cadet can participate in a day, we have an approx 160 mile round trip to the other side of the Wing for Wing Athletics. This usually means setting off around 07:00 for a 10:00 brief and the cadets sit around until gone 16:00 doing 3 events plus some for the relay. Its a long way for little activity unless you socialise with other squadrons and for staff you are getting involved in events where I have never been trained as to correct technique, I am surprised things like javelin, high jump and discus throw are still allowed.

From my point of view our Wing sports looked like

X-Country (typically Jan)
Athletics (May)
Swimming (Sept)
Sports trials for the Wing team (Football, rugby, netball, hockey)
Bowling (Nov-Dec)
we used to do 5-a-side football too but we haven’t had that for so long i can’t remember when int he year it was held.

Bowling tends to be popular but it is a long day to bowl 10 balls and find out who wins at the end of the day (up to two teams per Squadron)
I echo what @Sm12310 has said about athletics, a very long day for three events - but our Cadets enjoy the social side of it.
Swimming much the same but often less popular

Sounds like you know how to sort the system. We have staff waiting 3months to get things sorted. Not the avip. The other paperwork. We do have other staff where is took 6 months! Thing is then they go to scouts etc. Maybe they should do one of those sheets that they did for cadets to staff.
I remember the days of 1 year wait as well.

I’m wondering if there is motive at a higher level here to avoid climatic injuries concerns, in addition to money-saving efforts…

Athletics on a potentially hot day? Oh no. Winter sports in winter? Definitely not.

I thought we all adopted the WBGT method to determine this and thus avoid it?

For which there is no scientific or research base to validate the accuracy of any data as you are dealing with under 18s and not adults.

Yes, we’ve run that debate here already and it has its own thread.

it was a tongue and cheek comment…

What’s the point of that, the offers to sell were sent to every account in the Region?!

It will be bounced as it’s to the Air Cadet Organisation which doesn’t exist anymore.

It’s been that all along and responses have been made. It’s only very recently that the emails have started bouncing back because RAFAC disabled the address.

I’d really like to see a ‘why do you need to know?’ / justification field on FOI requests. I really can’t work out the reasoning to this one.

I can’t see what you’re seeing, but my time X years ago was that if you were competing at region and corps in sport, you were already an accomplished sportsperson in your county or however it was organised in the real world.

And so investing in the wider cohort, rather than those who are already elite, would make sense to me. Especially if the point is there’s limited cash.
