Changes to RAFAC Cyber

What do you think good looks like? How have you communicated this within the organisation? What feedback did you get? I think we are in reasonable shape but it is still early days and we need to work together to develop syllabi. Great opportunity!

This looks interesting, but why change the radio communications syllabus? Beyond replacing the optional networking module for silver (as that’s now covered by the cyber (where it should be)) and updating the PowerPoints a bit, I can’t see why it needs changing if its not broken.

You’re right (at least for silver) bronze seems to have the opposite problem and sounds a bit death by PowerPoint-y. Blue apparently has some level of interactivity, but as it can be delivered by any staff or MOI cadet, I’m assuming it won’t be particularly technical. That said will students of that course need a pc/laptop each to partake?

Network Fundamentals, a 2 day course that can be taught by trained instructors using remotely accessed equipment. So all a cadet needs is a computer with browser and an internet connection.

While this makes it accessible to the while org *cough* 1&2 OS and NI *cough* as no specialist equipment is needed. For most cadets having physical equipment to interact with seems like they will learn a lot more from the course and make it more fun.
What isn’t clear is if this is designed to be remote or in-person. If remote, what if a cadet doesn’t have access to the internet or a pc/laptop at home? And cadets will miss out on interacting with other cadets. In-person, has its problems too, for starters you’d need 150 odd pcs (assuming a course of 24 students + 1 instructor for 6 regions), but having access to computer labs seem inevitable, so this seems like a good time to start building them.

This seems like the biggest thing missing from the new courses, the only optional part mentioned is the “bolt-on” course for the foundation amateur licence (which is weird as gold contains intermediate regardless). Optional modules will allow the syllabus to be flexible enough for cadets to do more of what they are interested in, be that networking, security, programming, etc and not everyone will want to code. ‘Cyber’ is such a broad term and the syllabus doesn’t seem to reflect that.

Totally agree also need to look into information security / assurance and also operational technology they all work hand in hand and not separately

Quick question which seems to sit best here.

Anyone know why there is a minimum age limit of 14 for Bronze Radio?

I’m not understanding the rationale.

I’ve always understood it to be in line with the radio licensing law - Bronze allows someone to operate unsupervised on our Net, so an age limit makes sense.

But there isn’t a minimum age for an amateur licence!

So they can do silver but not bronze under 14?

Thank you

Done a deeper google - the age limit looks like it’s based on aviation usage, not standard ground based radio. So speculating but I take it we’ve assumed the aviation limits & applies them somewhere that doesn’t apply :ohmygod:

Not with us (Silver is 15) but RSBG set no minimum age for Foundation.

I thought the rationale was to do with pacing out the different levels and that of maturity (bronze operator able to supervise blue operator).

I’m wondering how they will deliver the amatuer license content and exam, especially intermediate. AFAIK its pretty rare to do the foundation license as a part of silver due to the requirement for someone aptly qualified to teach and assess.

“Cyber” in the RAFAC is usually just associated with cybersec/infosec. It seems that all the other fields are left up to CFAV to do interest sessions on (which I’ve seen before for block based embedded programming and electronics). It would be nice to have some of these things integrated into the bronze, silver, and gold syllabus though (even as optional extras).

It’s actually easier to deliver the Foundation than the voice module. It tends to be access to kit that limits it, at least round where we are.
