An officers No.1’s thread

Oh definitely, and the worst thing is when people try and wear 1s trousers with a 5s jacket, only witnessed it twice but my god it was not a pretty sight

As a baby pilot officer, I had an old No5 jacket given to me for a sqn dinner, had to wear No1 trousers then.

However, I invested in a set of No5s, and had that for over 15 years now.

So join an organisation that wears RAF uniform but, apart from initial jumper kitting, no No.1s? That will be interesting on formal parades :man_shrugging:t2:

SNCOs got over that years ago tbh

It might just be a rumour that it might stop… I was hoping someone on here might know more…

Don’t know a definitive answer but no thay rumours been banded about for the last 18 months or so

The rumour goes that as OIC is virtual at the moment it might be a good time to bin issuing them off…

Mods 1-3 are virtual

Mod 4-5 I haven’t heard if this will be locally done or at Cranwell…

If local then special arrangements would need to be made, so I can see how that would be easier to just not bother and make it private purchase.

Sizes online vary, and you’d be lucky to find a complete set in your size. A new set from Turner Virr £330 - and that’s an investment by any standard in something you might only wear a few times a year.

But then that logic of big investment in something not often used would make not issuing them a reasonable proposal.

Although, that said… a few hundred quid on your hobby is probably not too hard to swallow…

My other hobbies don’t pay VA and require investment.

Even going to the local non league football is £20 a home game by time you’ve paid for a ticket, a hot dog and petrol. In 2 seasons you’ll have spent more than on a set of uniform that will last a lot longer than that.

If you got a decent fishing rod/reel it’d likely be not far off that…

So maybe it isn’t too bad.

There’s means and ways

When normality resumes give your parent station stores a bell and see if they have any part worn returned no1s you can kindly try and purchase… They’ll probs be grateful for a pack of biccys

Depends on your personal financial position doesn’t it?

Not everyone is going to be able to drop hundreds of pounds on a tailored outfit to wear a few times a year.

No, of course not, but I guess it’s the same as anything - if you smoked, go to watch sports, participate in sports etc etc, there’ll be a cost involved… which was my point.

It of course doesn’t stop it being a large cost and payable in one hit.

Parent station. Oh, to have one of those.

This. People seem to forget that even though yes, you are volunteering. It is also a hobby for 95% of us. Given the amount of other money I’ve spent on my other hobbies, a few £100 towards cadets isn’t actually the end of the world, especially for those of you who can claim 28 days VA too!

When I have a few £1000 worth of climbing equipment and other outdoors stuff, and then a a couple more £1000 on a computer setup, a few £100 for a set of 1s wouldn’t wind me up too much, as long as it wasn’t compulsory for all.

This was my recent investment - need to take up fishing, as apparently that is “allowed” whereas shooting on a range = verboten!

I think some have managed to scrounge a few No 1’s from our parent stn - always worth asking Clothing Stores.

How long is your hallway? I could send you some large steel plates?

edit: Of course there is an American who has already done this…

You have time for other hobbies…
How?

A partner that doesn’t like me very much and no kids! :joy::joy:

Jeepers! I cringed when the largest calibre came out! :scream_cat:

If I opened up the lounge doors through into the conservatory, then the doors into the garden, I could get about 35 - 40 yds? The Longhaired General would disapprove of me disturbing her Netflix though! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Might not be in scope of my FAC conditions. :sunglasses:

Just tell them Boris said stay at home, and this was the best you could come up with

I may or may not have participated in fitting out cadets with No. 1s strictly for internal purposes…

The problem is the current issue no. 2 trousers are completely the wrong colour - much darker than they should be. They look awful with a No. 1 jacket even from a distance.

If you have some of the old scratchy woollen no. 2 trousers then they work OK from a distance but not really close up.

NB that some no. 5 jackets are made from a completely different (soft) material from the trousers - by intention. Some do match exactly. My understanding is the former is really correct and the latter is a cheaper modern invention.
