Sqn Flight simulator

We have just had a new building built and I want to make a flight sim on our sqn (at the moment we just use a laptop on a projector)

I can build a PC for the sim and all that good stuff but what I want is a set up like that got any tips???

The sim that I build for my squadron, as you can see above in photo’s and squadron news article, cost about 2 grand. you don’t need any more than that.

What you need to decide is if you want to use projectors or screens. if you want to go with projectors then you might want to design “windows” to be able to look out of to the projector screen(s)

additionally you need to decided if you want virtual or physical instrument panels and switches.

Well we move into our new building in the next month so all depends on how much room we have. At the moment all we have is a laptop on a projector its pretty dated now using FS 95 i think

Check out X-Plane http://www.x-plane.com, it’s superb.
I’ve been using version 9 very happily.

There’s a good online community for it as well with scenery, aircraft, &c.
http://x-plane.org

It has far more realistic flight models than Microsoft flight sim. Less of a ‘game’, more a true simulator.
It also lends it’s self easily to networking and you can split the load over multiple PCs. So for example you could have one or two good graphics PCs running the visuals, another lower spec running the flight engine and a third as an instructor console.
The instructor can view the instruments, maps, &c and has menu access to change weather conditions on the fly; schedule system or instrument failures, bird strikes, &c.

I don’t want to get into get into a discussion of whether xplane or fsx is better but I wouldn’t say that fsx is like a game, it is still a simulation.

zinggy, The best advice I can give you is to build a computer with a screen and the projector (or two) connected.
Then download a free trial of fsx and xplane, and decide which you want to use.
use a screen to display instrument panel and then the projector for the outside view.

Kinda like this (http://www.rogerdodger.net/images/PACS_Ado_2008-1.jpg) accept with a screen where the keyboard is.
